If there aren’t enough hours in the day, you won’t necessarily create more useful time for yourself by stealing some hours from the night. You need your sleep. You need rest and relaxation, too. If you run too fast or work too hard, you may compromise your discrimination. You may then end up complicating what ought to be a simple situation or overlooking some key point, which you might easily identify if you were not so tired.

How true, how true, esp. the first sentence.  Very happy with last night’s late-night burst of productivity though.  Shit needed to get done, and in a refreshing change, I at least got my packing out of the way at a decent hour.  Hello, Cleveland!

Speaking of, the CEO of the company I work for is coming down to my office in, oh, an hour?  And it looks like an 18-year-old boy’s dorm room.  Eek.

I knew that the federal government had taken away Sheriff Arpaio’s authority to conduct immigration raids, and I knew that he was getting around the ban and continuing to terrorize migrants (primarily by arresting them on bogus charges), but I am nevertheless shocked by the fact that

THE MOTHERFUCKER FORCED A WOMAN TO GIVE BIRTH IN SHACKLES.

While I firmly believe that everyone is entitled to his or her day in court, this website is among THE most tasteless things I have laid eyes on in recent memory.  Who could trust the judgment of any attorney who thought these photos were ok?

(Note:  If you go to the actual site, you’ll see they got wise and changed some of the offending photos to more innocuous images.  However, some of them are still intact.  To wit:  “Cocaine, Meth or Heroin Delivery”.)

I was reflexively anti-Fallon at first; I thought he was a weak link on SNL and the early days of Late Night did little to change my opinion.  But I’ll be damned if he doesn’t make me laugh out loud, literally, nearly every time I watch the show.  I initially thought this was due to the participatory gags that leaned heavily on the Roots, which are indeed entertaining.  But stuff like this, and the (funnier, but already widely circulated) “Going Rogue Goes Rogue” Rachel Maddow skit suggest that he and his writers do just fine on their own; they just needed some time.

And I just needed to get past my sentimental attachments to Conan O’Brien, who, let’s face it, is sinking into his own schtick.  (That said, if somebody wants to compile a DVD of Norm MacDonald’s appearances on the new Tonight Show for me, it would be the best Xmas present EVER.)

Much like my experience seeing Ume open for FOTL a couple weeks ago (in which I went in blind and was blown away to the point that I purchased their entire discography at the merch table), this is a pleasant, and wholly unexpected surprise.  It’s comforting to know that they still happen sometimes.

I don’t remember any of the actual accident. But Jay was there — he called 911, not realizing it was me. He was just walking along the street. He went with me in the ambulance. I had my neck brace on and I was on the board, so he was pretty nervous.

I think the members of Sloan are at the point where they have twins-like ESP.  This interview is also interesting because it hints at the considerations involved with musicmaking as a job, which is not the same thing as the “music business.”

Both my depositions and my wisdom teeth surgery got moved around such that I can make it to the Lincoln Hall show.  (Note:  The show wasn’t the cause of the rescheduling, but I wouldn’t put it past me.)  Woot!  Curious to check out the venue as well.

Spinner (via Chromewaves), where, I might add, you can listen to For Your Own Special Sweetheart in full.   If that’s not something to be thankful for, I don’t know what is.  Actually, I do know what is.  Today, it’s offish - Scott and I have been together for what has probably been the most head-spinning year-and-a-half of my life.  Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

today’s jam

Watch out for my bullshit, everybody’s got it!  Much respect to Lou Barlow, but I prefer golden-era Jason songs any day.  Except for “Brand New Love,” because, well, duh.

You're Too Good For This

WHAT. THE. FUCK.

This would be a good time to share my R. Kelly story.  I was at a networking event last week populated primarily, but not exclusively by lawyers.  Got to talking with someone whose job required him/her to attend the R. Kelly trial.  The experience pretty much eviscerated this person’s faith in justice.

Not sure how much of this is already out there - I followed the trial at a high level when it was going on but haven’t scoured the internet - but here’s my acquaintance’s account:

There was more than one sex tape. The infamous urination incident went as follows:

Kelly was being fellated by the 13 (14?) year old girl when he got a call on his cellphone and shoved the girl away from him.  Returning a few minutes later, angry at losing his hard-on, Kelly shoved his dick in the girl’s mouth and started peeing, the girl visibly choking.

I don’t know what I thought exactly happened prior to hearing this description.  I read numerous accounts that blankly stated that the victim was “urinated on”, a neutralizing word choice not dissimilar to how ”intercourse” was used in most reports of the Polanski case.  But let’s be clear, he was pissing down a tweenager’s throat.  I’m sure the girl’s parents are enjoying their payoff.

I seriously grieve for teenage girls these days.

See also.  And also.

Disgusting. No one with an active role, let alone a leading role, in the Potsville raids should serve our country as a U.S. attorney.  While I have no doubt Rose was under pressure from the Bush Justice Department with respect to the substantive charges, the procedural choices (or rather, the choice to forgo due process procedures altogether) were hers and hers alone.

“And one more special message to go
And then I’m done, and I can go home
I love myself better than you
I know it’s wrong so what should I do?”

And a perfect day for this song.

OH CRAP!

While we are on the subject of heavy guitar-based music, I forgot about this one.  Haven’t bought any records in over a month and now that I’m blocks away from Permanent Recs I have no excuse to tarry…

Have to wait for/deal with the cable guy (even worse, the COMCAST guy…fucking cheaters) on Saturday.  May need to indulge in a record-buying/Hoosier Mama excursion afterwards.  Perhaps the best (but thus far, least utilized) aspect of the new apartment is being WALKING DISTANCE FROM PIE.

Oh, to have Andy Falkous’ power to make virtually any phrase sound like the purest, deadliest venom! I’d be happy just to be able to say proper names like Rick with an equal degree of dismissive disgust.

i have long thought the very same thing.  there are days when i would love to answer my work phone in a falkous voice to signal that i don’t have time for any bullshit.  the man has elevated disdain into an art form.
